How High Blood Sugar Can Lead to Gum Disease

Has your dentist near Belmont informed you that you have gum disease? If so, then you may be wondering what causes this oral health problem. As your dentist will tell you, good oral hygiene is important for protecting both your teeth and gums. One reason for this is that when plaque, which is made up of bacteria, is allowed to accumulate in your mouth, this can lead to inflammation of your gums and the earliest stage of gum disease, called gingivitis. If allowed to progress, gum disease can lead to gum tissue and bone damage, as well as cavities and tooth loss.

Some of the bacteria that can lead to gum disease feed on sugar. This means that the more sugar that you have in your mouth, the more these bacteria can replicate. For people who have high blood sugar, higher levels of sugar are often detected in the mouth, as well. Because of this, having high blood sugar, undiagnosed diabetes, or poorly controlled diabetes can lead to gum disease. If you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes, then speak with your dentist about decreasing your risk for gum disease.
