Answering Patients’ Questions About Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies include severe toothache, as well as damage to teeth caused by physical trauma. You may crack, chip, or knock out a tooth in an accident, fight, or while playing sports. Toothache

If you are suffering from a severe toothache, use dental floss to carefully remove any food particles lodged between teeth. Then rinse out your mouth with warm water. See your dentist right away.

Cracked, Chipped, or Broken Tooth

If you have cracked, chipped, or damaged your tooth, use warm water to rinse your mouth. If you are experiencing facial swelling, apply cold compresses to the area. Visit your dentist as quickly as possible.

Missing Tooth

If you have knocked out a tooth, try replacing the tooth in its original position. If this isn't possible, immerse the tooth in a glass of milk. You can also keep it from drying out by holding it carefully inside your mouth (do not swallow it) or by using a tooth preservation solution marked with the ADA seal of approval. With baby teeth, keep the tooth from drying out and bring the child to the dentist as rapidly as possible.

Injuries to Your Jaw, Tongue, or Lip

If you believe that you may have seriously injured your jaw, you will need immediate medical attention. Go straight to your emergency dentist or nearest ER. You can use cold compresses to help reduce any swelling. If you have bitten your tongue or lip and the area is bleeding uncontrollably, you may need medical care. Rinse the affected areas or apply cold compresses. Consult a medical or dental professional right away.
